Traditional genealogy of bengali brahmins: caTTopAdhyAYa and
other families of kAshyapa gotra.
These are the traditional genealogies of rADh.I families descended
from dakSa of kAshyapa gotra.
All caTTopAdhyAYas are of this gotra. No attempt has been made to
make this page more comprehensible: it is mainly intended as people
looking for their origins, and I am sure they will treat this
only as material to start them off towards more serious
investigation.

mine. This means that it is
95% certain that the last common ancestor with me, a claimed
descendant of Vedagarbha, is less than 115
generations, and between 9 and 129 generations. The modal value is 41
generations, or about 1000 years. This is not too different than the
distance to Moulinath Banerjee's results:
a difference of 10/29 translates to between 11 and 134 generations, less
than 121 generations, with a modal value of 49 generations or about 1200 years.
Note that at these large distances, the generation calculation is likely
to be unreliable except as estimates of minimal separations.

It would not have been possible for me to collect this information
except for the very useful book called brAhmaNa-itihAsa by
shrIharilAla caTTopAdhyAYa. I have no idea how he collected all
this material, and what criterion he used to select from among the
available genealogies of bengali brahmins. The book has sometimes
been difficult to decipher, and interested readers should look at
the original to verify my interpretation.
And finally, remember, tradition is not history. Similar caveats
apply to the historicity of these genealogies as apply to my own.
