Traditional genealogy of bengali brahmins: caTTopAdhyAYa and other families of kAshyapa gotra.

These are the traditional genealogies of rADh.I families descended from dakSa of kAshyapa gotra. All caTTopAdhyAYas are of this gotra. No attempt has been made to make this page more comprehensible: it is mainly intended as people looking for their origins, and I am sure they will treat this only as material to start them off towards more serious investigation.

Annapurna Chatterjee's grandson (son's son) Arunabh has Y-DNA STR type of: DYS393:13 390:25 19/394:15 391:10 385a:11 385b:14 426:12 388:12 439:11 389-1:14 392:11 389-2:32 458:16 459a:9 459b:10 455:11 454:11 447:25 437:14 448:20 449:35 464a:12 464b:15 464c:15 464d:16 DYS460:11 GATA H4:11 YCA IIa:19 YCA IIb:23 DYS456:15 607:16 576:19 570:21 CDY a:37 CDY b:38 DYS442:13 DYS438:11. This is 19/394:-1 391:-1 439:+1 458:-1 459a:-1 447:+1 449:+3 464a:-3 464c:-1 460:-1 GATAH4:-1 570:+3 CDYa:+1 CDYb:-4 442:-1 relative to mine. This means that it is 95% certain that the last common ancestor with me, a claimed descendant of Vedagarbha, is less than 115 generations, and between 9 and 129 generations. The modal value is 41 generations, or about 1000 years. This is not too different than the distance to Moulinath Banerjee's results: a difference of 10/29 translates to between 11 and 134 generations, less than 121 generations, with a modal value of 49 generations or about 1200 years. Note that at these large distances, the generation calculation is likely to be unreliable except as estimates of minimal separations.

Ronojoy Chatterji, a descendant of a Charu Chandra Chatterji c.1900–c.1972 of Allahabad, India however has been confirmed to be a R2 with STR profile 393:14 390:23 19/394:13 391:10 385a:14 385b:19 426:12 388:13 439:10 389-1:13 392:10 389-2:29; and is a 12/12 match against a Tushar Nath Bhadury, a Sanmay Bandyopadhyaya, and a Bengali by the name of Javin Antony Reid. A Rupam Chatterjee, descendant of Priyanath Shastry, has 393:14 390:24 19/394:13 391:11 385a:14 385b:19 426:12 388:13 439:10 389-1:13 392:10 389-2:29 and differs by one each at 390 and 391 from the above; and a decendant of Manimohan Misra (ca 1897–1978) of Kashyap gotra has 393:15 390:23 19/394:13 391:10 385a:14 385b:20 426:12 388:13 439:10 389-1:13 392:10 389-2:29 which again is a two step mutation.

It would not have been possible for me to collect this information except for the very useful book called brAhmaNa-itihAsa by shrIharilAla caTTopAdhyAYa. I have no idea how he collected all this material, and what criterion he used to select from among the available genealogies of bengali brahmins. The book has sometimes been difficult to decipher, and interested readers should look at the original to verify my interpretation.

And finally, remember, tradition is not history. Similar caveats apply to the historicity of these genealogies as apply to my own.
